Itinerary

Day One ( Travel from Medan to Bukit Lawang)

Pick-up from Medan Kuala Namu airport or Medan hotel and travel by private transport (air-con) directly to Bukit Lawang (3-4 hours). You will have time to explore the village, visit the bat cave (depending on your arrival time) or relax in the accommodation/hotel for remainder of the day/evening.

Day Two (Village Tour)

Becak tour

After breakfast, our your guide will collect you at 08.30am from the accommodation/hotel and you will start your journey by traditional becak (tuk tuk) to a local village. On your 3 hour trip, you will visit local rice fields and learn about the process of rice production, from the fields to the nearby rice refinery plant. You will also get the chance to visit a palm sugar plantation, find out how the sap is refined into brown sugar, and some of the traditional uses for palm sugar. Along the way, your guide will help you to pick fruit straight from the tree (depending on the season) for you to sample. Lunch will be at a local restaurant where you will have the opportunity to sample various Indonesian meals.

During the village tour, we will have experience how the people live. Talk to them, hear their stories, play games with their children and discover their world. And at noon back to Bukit Lawang.

Days Three ( 3 hours jungle trekking )

After breakfast, our guide will pick up you at 08.30am from the accommodation/hotel in Bukit Lawang and you will start your journey into the jungle of Gunung Leuser National Park to see wild orangutans and if you’re lucky the Thomas’ leaf monkey, white-handed gibbon, black gibbon, long-tailed macaque, pig-tailed macaque, hornbills, peacocks and monitor lizards.

On 3 hours trek your guide will educate you on the local wildlife, flora and fauna you may encounter in Gunung Leuser, and teach you about the local trees/plants which can be used in traditional medicine. After lunch, you will walk back to Bukit lawang accommodation/hotel from the jungle.

Days Four (Trip to Elephant)

At around 09:00 am, your guide will collect you from your guesthouse in Bukit Lawang and you will start your journey to Tangkahan by aircon jeep (2 hours) along bumpy roads through villages and palm oil plantations. On arrival, after registering with the park office, you will start your elephant trek through the jungle (2 hours), where your guide will explain how Tangkahan became a protected area for elephants, as well as showing you the local flora, fauna and wildlife.

After your trek, you will have the opportunity to wash and feed the elephants, before eating lunch at a traditional restaurant overlooking the river. After luch, we will drop you to the guest housein Tangkahan (check in).

Afternoon – a short walk from the restaurant and a swim across the river leads you to a natural hot spring, where you will have time to swim and relax, after back to the guesthouse (overnight here).

Days Five (Today Journey back to Medan)

After breakfast, start your journey back to Medan ( 5 to 6 hours). Time permitting, you will have the opportunity to visit one of Medan’s cultural highlights e.g. Maimun Palace, Great Mosque of Medan, Tjong A Fie’s mansion, Marian Shrine of Annai Velangkanni or Maha Vihara Maitreya Cemara Asri, before being dropped at the airport/ accommodation.
